First Light on Grand Teton -
Grand Teton National Park Painting

I am not a morning person. It's hard to drag myself out of bed before dawn, and it's even harder when the bed is warm and the temperature outside is -3 F. Sights like Grand Teton National Park make it worthwhile.
Getting out of bed in my hotel on Jackson, I loaded my photo gear into the car and drove out to the Snake River overlook. From there I put on my snowshoes and made the short walk through deep snow to where I watched the sunrise. The highlight moment, captured in this painting, was when the very tip of Grand Teton glowed in the sun's direct light while the rest of the range remained in shadow waiting for the light to crawl down to meet it.
Spectacular. Cold, but spectacular.
